Gig Review: The Jezabels @ The Corner Hotel, 6th and 7th April

Both nights had seen faultless and magical performances from The Jezabels. I was left in no doubt whatsoever: this is the best band in Australia.

Gig Review: Eddie Vedder @ The Palais, 25th March

Eddie Vedder walks calmly onto the Palais Theatre Stage. He is wearing relaxed and slightly bohemian clothes, almost like a mere mortal. Fitting this, the stage is setup like a really rich busker’s haunt, with about twenty different guitars surrounding one solitary chair and microphone at front and center.

The crowd goes wild. It’s a curious crowd as well, mostly consisting of diehard Pearl Jam fans wearing tour shirts from ten years ago and looking out of place without a mosh pit, with a smattering of hipsters lured out by the promise of material from Vedder’s ‘Into The Wild’ soundtrack.

Gig Review: Georgia Fair And Daniel Lee Kendall @ The Empress Hotel, 24th March

It was something of a gentle folk music lovers’ wet dream at the Empress Hotel last night. Surrounded by the idyllic atmosphere of the small venue, a packed crowd enjoyed chilling out to some fantastic music provided by three up and coming Australians acts, spearheaded by the always wonderful Georgia Fair.

Great Australian Music Blogs

You may or may not have noticed that I’ve been a bit slack with the updates lately. I’ve been doing through a gigdrought (which is thankfully about to end) and so haven’t had any reviews to write up, and with uni starting again I’m finding I just don’t have as much spare time as I’m used to having.

Whilst I certainly hope you stick with me despite only semi-regular posts for the next couple of weeks (things should calm down a bit soon), if you’re needing your regular fix of Australian music there are plenty of other great blogs where you can get it.

Album Review: DeVotchKa ‘100 Lovers’

DeVotchKa’s main claim to fame is twofold: Win Butler is a big fan of their music, and they did ‘that song from that ad’. During their career spanning six albums, a handful of EPs, and one movie soundtrack, DeVotchKa’s music has been described as everything from ‘gypsy punk’ to the bewildering ‘Muse meets Gogol Bordello’ (thanks, Triple J). As difficult as their music is to categorise, the one thing that everyone seems to agree on is that this Colorado band is something pretty special.

Their latest album, ‘100 Lovers’, only further asserts this fact, and is perhaps their most confident and cohesive outing since the critically acclaimed ‘How It Ends’ album of 2004.

Gig Review: Foster The People @ The Northcote Social Club, 16th February

Last night LA band Foster The People played a staggeringly good show to a sold out crowd at the Northcote Social Club as a part of their first ever international tour. They showed no signs of their relative youth as a band, instead delivering a flawless and exhilarating set that lived up to the hype and confirmed Foster The People’s position as pretty much the hottest new band in the world right now.
