Boy And Bear – Mexican Mavis
(Live With Marcus Mumford And Laura Marling)
“As they came out of the sunshine, the flowers nestled in their hair.”
Once again, in all fairness I was all over this song last year, but I think it is a track that will forever be associated with 2010 for me and a lot of other people. For it is this year that has seen the meteoric rise of Boy And Bear. They’ve gone from playing a nervous set at the smallest stage of Homebake last year to supporting Mumford And Sons, touring the UK, playing to packed crowds at festivals such as Splendour In The Grass, and selling out their own headline tour this year.
These guys are huge right now, and this song, Mexican Mavis, from their 2010 EP ‘Emperor Antarctica’, is enough proof that it is thoroughly deserved. Yeah it’s Fleet Foxes as, but find comparisons all you want, Boy And Bear have a sound all of their own. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: when all the band members harmonise vocals, they are in a league of their own.
These guys are going to be absolutely massive in the very near future, and while I can’t help but feel an impending relocation to the UK is on the horizon, it must be said that their music deserves no less than international acclaim.
