Two Door Cinema Club – Undercover Martyn
“And she spoke words that would melt in your hands. And she spoke words of wisdom.”
For whatever reason, those opening lines are the most instantly recognisable lyrics of music for me this year. There’s something about them that I’ve come to associate with 2010, even though I have no idea why.
Irish band Two Door Cinema Club came out of nowhere with their debut album this year, ‘Tourist History’. Following it they have already gained a large international profile, and played in front of an enormous crowd at Splendour, putting on one hell of a show.
They represent much of what is so great about indie-electro-pop-whatever music. Their music is just so bouncy and so fun. Sure it’s inoffensive, but not all great music has to be controversial or meaningful. There is always a place for fun music.
Undercover Martyn is actually the third single from the album, which both demonstrates the depth of the record and the fact that whoever was choosing the singles screwed up. For me, and for a lot of other people I’ve talked to, this is easily the standout song of the album, if only because it takes everything that is great about Two Door Cinema Club and puts it into overdrive.
Probably the funnest song of the year for me, in no small part because of the party that was their Splendour set.
