Splendour Sideshows Guide

Back by popular demand, here’s my trademark easy-to-read guide to Splendour In The Grass sideshows (there are two lies in that sentence). If you’re sick of lists that are arranged alphabetically or that only include ‘official sideshows’, then this is for you: every sideshow announced so far arranged by date so that clashes are obvious and with ticket prices, venues, and support acts all listed.

Splendour In The Grass 2012 Lineup

Splendour In The Grass is moving back to Byron Bay following a temporary stay at Woodfordia, and there can be no doubt that with the move to a smaller venue there has come a slightly ‘smaller’ lineup, meaning in this case a more pronounced focus on Australia acts and no mammoth names like Coldplay and Kanye (although personally I think the latter is a good thing). Thankfully however there is still a ton of quality to be found here, most notably in headline acts that don’t tour Australia every other year, as well as a pretty impeccable selection of the ‘it’ bands in Australia right now.

My 10 Favourite Gigs Of 2011

Musically speaking, I think my entire prior life had just been a warmup for this year. With only a few exceptions, you could pretty much name this list the ‘Best Gigs Of My Life’ and it would still be accurate. Many of these gigs have given me moments and memories that will stay with me forever, and more than anything they demonstrated just how powerful, important, and magical music can be.

Last Dinosaurs ‘Zoom’

If I’m completely honest, when I first saw Brisbane band Last Dinosaurs live I would have never in a million years predicted that the group would go on to be as big as they are now. That’s not to say that they were bad live, far from it in fact, but rather that they played to one of the smallest crowds I’ve ever seen at a gig, consisting of mostly “friends and family” as the band themselves put it. Plus me and a mate. But, to their credit, the band really do look poised to make it big rather soon, and their latest single ‘Zoom’ demonstrates why perfectly.

Cloud Control Interview

I recently had a chat with Heidi from Australian expat band Cloud Control, who has been announced as one of the ambassadors for the prestigious Australian Music Prize for 2011. We talked about the prize itself, setting fire to Arcade Fire’s stage, chatting with Win Butler, Cloud Control’s relocation to the UK, Tame Impala’s A-list celebrity fanbase, plans for a new Cloud Control album, and of course that legendary Splendour stampede.

Jinja Safari Interview

It’s been an eventful year for Sydney band Jinja Safari so far. Not only have they steadily released tracks from their second EP for free online, but they’ve also sold out shows on a national headline tour, played at the Big Day Out in Sydney, and graced the main stage of Splendour In The Grass. I had a brief chat with one of the band’s two ‘harmonizing frontmen and multi-instrumentalists’, Marcus.
