The Chemist – Lullaby #1 (Mercy)

“I want to believe, I want to believe in mercy, mercy.”

I first discovered these guys when I heard this track on Triple J, only later realising that I would be seeing them open for Boy And Bear. They certainly didn’t disappoint there, putting an a great set which compelling me to pick up their ‘Lullabies EP’ after the show.

And it has been on high rotation ever since. This Perth outfit really are onto something big. Somehow they manage to merge idyllic, relaxed instrumentation with dark and foreboding undertones, creating for a very surreal and very unique style. This is evident on the ‘Lullabies EP’ as a whole, but also especially in this track, Lullaby #1 (Mercy), where the constant backing of a softly played xylophone combines with lyrics such as “The streets are riddled red with fires, there’s vultures swooping like hell”.

It’s this disparity between musical style and subject matter that make The Chemist so enthralling as a band. Lullaby #1 (Mercy) perfectly demonstrates everything that is so great about them, and why they are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the coming months and years.
