The Griswolds ‘Mississippi’

The reliably excellent Rare Finds have announced their first band of 2012, and it’s none other than Sydney’s The Griswolds. The band not may be from Brisbane like most of Rare Finds’ signings, but they play just as infectious pop music as the likes of YesYou and The Belligerents, which is a very very good thing. Check out their euphoric single ‘Mississippi’.

Sufjan Is Coming Back

In what is genuinely surprising news, Sydney’s Vivid Festival has announced today the first act of their 2012 lineup, and it is none other than Sufjan Stevens. Given that Sufjan toured Australian last year you could have been forgiven for thinking that he wouldn’t be making it back out our way for a while, but this news will no doubt be welcomed by hardcore fans as well as those who missed his tour last year. That is of course assuming that he will announce a series of dates around Australia to coincide with his appearance at Vivid.

The Ruminaters ‘Deadstuff’

The last thing that the Australian indie scene really needs is another garage-surf-rock band, but when the band in question is as good as Sydney’s The Ruminaters, I can certainly make an exception. Admittedly I wasn’t initially a huge fan of the band- until, that is, I saw them live at Splendour In The Grass last year and thought they were absolutely fantastic. I’m definitely disappointed that I won’t get a chance to catch them live again.

Colour Coding ‘Perfect’

Like a lot of people I’m suffering a bit from shimmery-indie-summer-electro-pop over-saturation as of late. It seems like half of the new Australian bands I hear about fit into this caricature, and even though they may be perfectly capable bands, there can certainly be too much of a good thing. But I guess that means that, when a new artist who plays that type of music stands out at me, they must be really, really good. Such is the case with Sydney duo Colour Coding, who have just released their first single, ‘Perfect’.

Here’s a quick chat I had with Jose, bassist and vocalist from Sydney up-and-comers Step-Panther. Their self-titled debut album is out November 4th on Speak N Spell through Inertia.
