Gig Review: Tunng @ The East Brunswick Club, 22nd February

How many bands perform an optical illusion whilst on stage intended to cause an imaginary sausage to float in your hands, as pre-recorded instructions guide them? I’m guessing not many. But then not many bands feature a keyboardist who also plays literally a collection of house keys suspended in the air in front of him with his feet whilst also playing keyboard. Only band does both of these things: Tunng.

And they played an utterly wonderful set at the East Brunswick Club last night that had the under-capacity but yet very enthusiastic crowd enchanted by the UK ‘folktronica’ outfit.

Gig Review: Foster The People @ The Northcote Social Club, 16th February

Last night LA band Foster The People played a staggeringly good show to a sold out crowd at the Northcote Social Club as a part of their first ever international tour. They showed no signs of their relative youth as a band, instead delivering a flawless and exhilarating set that lived up to the hype and confirmed Foster The People’s position as pretty much the hottest new band in the world right now.

Gig Review: Local Natives @ The Corner Hotel, 8th January

“This is out first ever headline show in Australia, and you guys have been everything we could have possibly hoped for.”

Last night, LA band Local Natives played one of their two Australian headline Laneway sideshows this tour, at The Corner Hotel. They played a set full of harmonies, hyper-active drumming and plenty of charm, consisting of the entirety of their brilliant debut album ‘Gorilla Manor’.

“Party in Melbourne on a Wednesday night, what is UP!”

Matt And Kim at the Corner Hotel was one of the most intense, energetic, and fun gigs I have ever been to at the Melbourne venue. I don’t think I have ever witnessed another band demolish the venue quite like that.

Gig Review: Sufjan Stevens @ The State Theatre, 31st January

“Hello, my name is Sufjan Stevens and I will be your entertainment for the night.”

I can safely say that I enjoyed this show just as much as the Opera House show, and that it was yet another simply magical and flawless set that left the entire crowd in awe of what we had witnessed and in little doubt that we had just seen one of the best musicians in the world.

It was so amazing and so special that even attempting to review it feels a little like trying to describe the indescribable. But here goes.

Gig Review: Sufjan Stevens @ The Sydney Opera House, 28th January

“It’s a long life, only one last chance. Couldn’t get much better, do you wanna dance?”

Sufjan Stevens is basically my favourite person in the world, and I travelled up to Sydney from Melbourne for the sole purpose of seeing him play at the Opera House. Naturally, I thought this show was pretty much the best thing ever. It has already gone down as one of my favourite shows of all time and was among the best two hours of my life, completely justifying the trip up to Sydney and then some.
