Boy And Bear @ The Forum, 18th Of May

It seems like an eternity ago when I saw a bunch of nervous guys play their first ever festival set in a cramped tent at Homebake. Since then Boy And Bear’s rise in Australian music has been nothing short of meteoric, and at no time has this been more clear than last night, when they played the second of two sold out shows at The Forum in Melbourne. And it was immediately obvious that the band have polished their live act to the point now where they are perfectly comfortable with playing a one and a half hour set in front of thousands of people, which it really didn’t seem like they were as little as a year ago. I guess you can call Boy And Bear an accomplished live Australian band now, and sure enough this show was pretty hard to find fault in.

Elbow @ Festival Hall, 21st Of March

There were a couple of strange things about Wednesday night’s Elbow show. Firstly, the band were returning to Australia despite touring as recently as mid-last year while playing Splendour In The Grass. Secondly, the choice of Festival Hall as a venue was very peculiar: it’s not exactly a mystery that it’s my least favourite music venue in Melbourne, and I would have far preferred to have seen Elbow at a venue such as The Palace or Forum. But, once the night’s music started none of this seemed to matter very much, because one thing that was very, very predictable about the gig was that Elbow were just fantastic.

Bon Iver @ The Sydney Opera House, 11th And 12th Of March

The most remarkable thing about Bon Iver and Justin Vernon in particular is how they have grown so much as a band and as a person respectively but yet have maintained their identity; how they have kept the essence of what made their early music so very special and imprinted it into everything they do, whether that be their sophomore album or playing at the Sydney Opera House in front of thousands of people with a ten-piece band. Three night in a row.

Watch Two New Radiohead Songs

Just in case you needed another reason to be excited for Radiohead’s upcoming Australian tour, last night the band played a gig in Miami where they featured not one but two new songs in a massive 24-song set. You can watch videos of both tracks, ’Identikit’ and ’Cut A Hole’, below, thanks to BPM.

Gig Review: Portugal. The Man And Givers @ The Corner Hotel, 9th February

It’s pretty rare that you can see three fantastic bands at the one gig for one very low price, but that’s exactly what those who visited the Corner Hotel last Thursday enjoyed. The double-headline bill of old indie favourites Portugal. The Man and new kids on the block Givers was a brilliant combination albeit a bit of an odd one, and chuck in opening act Guineafowl and you really do have an incredible gig for a Thursday night. It was lovely to get a bit of a taste of Laneway, and all the bands involved definitely delivered.

Gig Review: M83 @ The Prince Bandroom, 3rd February

If there was ever a time to see M83 live it is now. Armed both with material from their critically acclaimed and insanely popular 2011 double-album, as well as choice numbers from their older records, the band put on an exhilarating and powerful live show at the perfect venue of the Prince Bandroom to an adoring crowd.
