Them Swoops ‘Work Around It’

Cosine Records have been putting out some fantastic Australian releases recently, and the latest band to join the family is Melbourne’s Them Swoops. The duo are so good that Cosine Records have actually released a double A-side record from the boys as opposed to the split-release that they are accustomed to. It’s hardly surprising either: this is melodious, sweeping, infectious indie pop that can sound uncannily like Napoleon-era Phoenix at times, which is meant as the highest of compliments.

Ben And The Sea ‘The Sailor’

Ben And The Sea began life two years ago when musician Ben Webb left his home of Port Stephens in New South Wales and embarked on a journey that would eventually take him to more than 15 countries over 12 months, playing shows as he went. Eventually he settled in Belgium, where he formed the ‘And The Sea’ part of his band name, collecting a bunch of passionate musicians from all around the world to help him record and play live. The EP ‘A Life Outside’ is a result of this.

Inspired And The Sleep ‘What I Want And What I Need’

Californian outfit Inspired And The Sleep are fast becoming one of my favourite blog discoveries. Following the release of their album ‘Teenager’ featuring the fantastic singles ‘While We’re Young’ and ‘Running’, the band’s lead singer, Max Greenhalgh, has recently released a song recorded for Hi54LoFi Records’ Valentine’s Day compilation ‘I Love You And Stuff’. It’s called ‘What I Want And What I Need’, and you can listen to it and download it for free below.

Ocean Versus Daughter ‘Appolina’

The story of how Ocean Versus Daughter began life as a band sounds as if it was plucked from the pages of fiction. Lead singer Flanna Sheridan moved to Prague in an effort to break free of a desk job, where she proceeded to meet the four other members of the band in increasingly unlikely scenarios, ranging from Matt Ford, a Brit who had been ‘holidaying’ in Prague for over two years, to Jarmila Junková, a Czech girl who had been studying music theory while traveling around Europe in a caravan.

Umpire ‘Corner An Owl In An Alcove’

Based in Perth, Umpire have been around the music scene for the better part of five years now, but only released their debut album, ‘Now We’re Active’, last year. For those that have followed the band’s career from the beginning the wait must have been completely worth it however, because the album is fantastic, denying easy categorisation and instead drawing on countless different trends and elements to create an entirely unique sound. The wonderfully titled single ‘Corner An Owl In An Alcove’ is the perfect example of this.

Foxes ‘Youth’

Late last year solo artist Foxes, aka Louisa Rose Allen, released her debut digital single, ‘Youth’, on Neon Gold. A couple of days ago the single was made available for purchase as a vinyl via the official Neon Gold store, which is what brought it to my attention. But you don’t really care about that. What really matters is that Youth is a powerhouse of a song, and introduces the world to a female musician very much in the vein of fellow Neon Gold recruit Mariana And The Diamonds, only… well, better.
