Last Dinosaurs Interview

Last year was a decent one for Brisbane band Last Dinosaurs. They recorded their debut album, played with some huge international bands, watched their songs accrue over a million views on Youtube, and toured a little bit as well. With the aforementioned debut album, ‘In A Million Years’, due for release within a month and a UK tour ahead, 2012 is poised pretty damn nicely for them as well. I had a chat with lead singer Sean Caskey ahead of the album launch tour, but mostly we just ended up talking about the past and the future.

Umpire ‘Corner An Owl In An Alcove’

Based in Perth, Umpire have been around the music scene for the better part of five years now, but only released their debut album, ‘Now We’re Active’, last year. For those that have followed the band’s career from the beginning the wait must have been completely worth it however, because the album is fantastic, denying easy categorisation and instead drawing on countless different trends and elements to create an entirely unique sound. The wonderfully titled single ‘Corner An Owl In An Alcove’ is the perfect example of this.

Lovett ‘All The Time’

Ben Lovett (NOT also of Mumford And Sons) makes some damn fine solo music. Moreover, he makes a lot of very eclectic and diverse solo music, ranging from upbeat dancefloor fillers to dark grungy numbers. One of these songs is ‘All The Time’, and it’s definitely a personal favourite of mine.

The Ruminaters ‘Deadstuff’

The last thing that the Australian indie scene really needs is another garage-surf-rock band, but when the band in question is as good as Sydney’s The Ruminaters, I can certainly make an exception. Plus, any band that describes their music as “beatnik barnyard hillbilly swamp rock” can’t be bad. Have a listen to their first (and I believe only?) single, ‘Deadstuff’.

Kids Without Bikes

Kids Without Bikes is a Melbourne band absolutely demolishing the Triple J Unearthed charts at the moment (I’m talking holding the top three spots simultaneously). And there’s a good reason for this. They play really addictive, fast paced tunes that race along at a breakneck speed and mix in elements from genres as broad as […]

The Inbetweeners

I’m so in love with this song at the moment, Lola And Tom by The Inbetweeners: Lola And Tom tells a story about peoples’ private secrets and how these small but important things can completely change who they are, even if no-one knows them. It contrasts private and public lives, and does so with enthralling […]
