You Have To Hear: The Chairs

The Chairs

The Chairs are an indie rock band from Wisconsin, which of course is most famous at the moment for the rather magnificent claim of having given birth to Bon Iver.

They have taken the interesting strategy of self-releasing their albums and songs, and I mean genuinely self-releasing. This probably helps in some way to add to their homely, personal sound. And of course, it allows you to get much of their music for free (and legally as well!).

They have produced an outstanding collection of covers in the EP ‘Can We Be Friends?’. In particular I enjoyed their cover of Neutral Milk Hotel’s classic ‘In The Aeroplane Over The Sea’, which is complete with a Hendrix-esque opening. Their cover of Bon Iver’s ‘Flume’ on the same EP is also strong, and proves that the sheer melodies of Bon Iver can stand on their own, even without the eerie falsetto of Justin Vernon, which The Chairs (wisely) chose not to even attempt to imitate. The EP can be downloaded and streamed free here.

The Chairs’ own stuff stands up just as well. The track ‘Horse With Hoof Guns’ is a great song, and a single worthy of any new indie band. Its EP can be downloaded and streamed here, also free. When the driving, almost galloping, drum beat comes in is when you realise that these guys are really onto something. Likewise their first demo, ‘November EP’ (free here) has the real standout original track ‘Polly’.

Why would you think that I bought you a gift?” (‘Horse With Hoof Guns’). But there really is no catch for all this free stuff. Sure, you have to join their mailing list, but if you want their music then that should be fine, and it’s certainly a small price to pay anyway for so many great songs.

They seem to be really embracing this whole internet music business, what with the free download EPs and everything, which is simply awesome to see. They even did the whole Radiohead thing with asking you to nominate your price for their first full length (‘Laugh, It’s A Fright’, available here), however paying anything under US$5 is not an option.

They have a new album coming out on November 17th (‘Nine Ways’), and you can preorder the deluxe edition here to receive a seriously cool version of it: a complete book instead of a CD jewel case, and nine different covers to choose from. What’s more, every package is numbered, as well as being hand-assembled and posted by the band themselves (how indie is that!). If you like their free stuff then do the band a favour and actually buy it.

They definitely deserve that much.

But, in the meantime, go and grab all the free stuff!
