Glen Hansard ‘Philander’

Short of a new album from The Frames (which is looking increasingly unlikely to ever happen), a new Glen Hansard solo album is the best news I could have hoped for from the Irish singer/songwriter. The album is called ‘Rhyme And Response’, and it’s out June 19th. This is the first single from it, ’Philander’.

Tom Rosenthal ‘Take Care’

Not to be confused with the British comedian of the same name, Tom Rosenthal is a London-based musician who released his debut album ‘Keep A Private Room Behind The Shop’ last year to critical acclaim. He only recently came to my attention, but his music has almost immediately become something of an obsession. I can’t seem to stop listening to it. It’s nuanced, complex, and brooding, but yet it’s also very accessible and enjoyable from the off.

My Second Surprise ‘Bring The Sunshine’

My Second Surprise is a San Francisco band led by Israeli singer/songwriter Ayal Nistor. I hadn’t heard of them before a link to their latest music video, ’Bring The Sunshine’, dropped through my virtual mailbox, but the song and clip immediately grabbed my attention. Have a watch and you’ll probably see why.

Kate Martin ‘Candle Burnin’, Wax Drippin”

Townsville solo artist Kate Martin received a lot of attention with her debut album last year entitled ‘Synthetic Shoes, Leather Boots’, that was equal parts Middle East, Efterklang, and Seeker Lover Keeper, all condensed into one fantastic musician. Kate’s second album, ‘Hand Me My Bow And Arrow’, is due out in the next few days, and she has just released a video for the track ‘Candle Burnin’, Wax Drippin”. And here… we… go.

Ocean Versus Daughter ‘Appolina’

The story of how Ocean Versus Daughter began life as a band sounds as if it was plucked from the pages of fiction. Lead singer Flanna Sheridan moved to Prague in an effort to break free of a desk job, where she proceeded to meet the four other members of the band in increasingly unlikely scenarios, ranging from Matt Ford, a Brit who had been ‘holidaying’ in Prague for over two years, to Jarmila Junková, a Czech girl who had been studying music theory while traveling around Europe in a caravan.

Lovett ‘All The Time’

Ben Lovett (NOT also of Mumford And Sons) makes some damn fine solo music. Moreover, he makes a lot of very eclectic and diverse solo music, ranging from upbeat dancefloor fillers to dark grungy numbers. And he does this all within the space of one album, namely his debut LP ‘Highway Collection’, which was released last year and features tracks recorded over the space of three years as he traveled around America. One of these songs is ‘All The Time’, and it’s definitely a personal favourite of mine.
