While Day One of Splendour In The Grass had been full to the brim with amazing music, timetable clashes, and rushing between stages with very little down time, Day Two for me was much more relaxed. I do think there were perhaps a few timetabling issues that could have been handled better, but ultimately this was just a personal preference thing: there wasn’t a whole heap of music I wanted to see during Day Two. It certainly wasn’t a bad thing, as it allowed for time to fully explore the festival grounds and really take in the atmosphere.

Splendour In The Grass Day One Review
Returning to Splendour In The Grass this year felt like returning to a second home after a prolonged absence.
Everything was just the way I remembered it, from the amazing shops, the delicious food, the art installations, the campsite, the chilled atmosphere, the cool people, The Mango Hut, and of course the music. Just walking around the venue brought back so many great memories from last year.

Gig Review: Grouplove @ The Corner Hotel, 2nd August
Rarely do you get a band whose name so perfectly encapsulates everything that they are about as Los Angeles’ Grouplove. Their music is nothing short of brilliant, but yet it really is their energy and obvious love for one another and for their fans that make Grouplove’s live shows so very amazing. And they demonstrated this beautifully last night at the Corner Hotel for their Melbourne Splendour sideshow.

Gig Review: Foster The People @ The HiFi, 27th July
This review is going to be a bit different to usual, which probably just means that it’s going to be short enough so that you might actually finish it. I didn’t have a chance to write up Fotser The People’s Splendour sideshow before heading to Splendour itself, and now all my music brain space has been taken up by memories of the festival. But I’ll do my best anyway, because it was a show that deserves a writeup.

Gig Review: James Blake @ The Prince Bandroom, 26th July
James Blake’s live show comes with near-impossible expectations. He doesn’t play the type of music that is easy to transfer onto a live setting, and moreover he doesn’t play the type of music to which a crowd can give him any real immediate feedback, apart from nodding along slowly and clapping in between tracks. Indeed last night at the Prince Bandroom, I wasn’t quite sure whether the crowd as a whole had loved or hated his set until I heard snippets of conversation from people leaving including phrases such as “out of this world” and “most incredible show ever”.
More than anything my uncertainty as to the overall feelings towards the show were probably indicative of the fact that the crowd, for the better part of the night, had simply been in a trance, held captive by three men (but one in particular), unable to move or think properly without breaking the spell that James Blake had cast on an entire sold out Prince Bandroom crowd.
