Ocean Versus Daughter ‘Appolina’

The story of how Ocean Versus Daughter began life as a band sounds as if it was plucked from the pages of fiction. Lead singer Flanna Sheridan moved to Prague in an effort to break free of a desk job, where she proceeded to meet the four other members of the band in increasingly unlikely scenarios, ranging from Matt Ford, a Brit who had been ‘holidaying’ in Prague for over two years, to Jarmila Junková, a Czech girl who had been studying music theory while traveling around Europe in a caravan.

Ghoul Call It Quits

Beloved Sydney indie group Ghoul have announced via their Facebook page this afternoon that they are retiring. Admittedly I wasn’t initially a huge fan of the band- until, that is, I saw them live at Splendour In The Grass last year and thought they were absolutely fantastic. I’m definitely disappointed that I won’t get a chance to catch them live again.

Oliver Tank ‘Last Night I Heard Everything’

Syndey electro artist Oliver Tank has been receiving a bit of attention lately. His debut EP ‘Deams’ was recently featured on NPR’s prestigious Top 5 Bandcamp Releases Of The Year list, the EP’s first single, Last Night I Heard Everything, is being used in a Get Up ad campaign in support of gay marriage which has been viewed over three million times on Youtube, and he has been nominated for a whole host of awards. It’s taken me a while to check him out, but it was well worth the wait.

It seems like half of the new Australian bands I hear about fit into this caricature, and even though they may be perfectly capable bands, there can certainly be too much of a good thing. But I guess that means that, when a new artist who plays that type of music stands out at me, they must be really, really good. Such is the case with Sydney duo Colour Coding, who have just released their first single, ‘Perfect’.

Hey Geronimo ‘Why Don’t We Do Something?’

Hey Geronimo are something of a Brisbane supergroup, featuring members of The Boat People, Blame Ringo!, and Montpelier, three of my favourite indie Australian bands. So it’s hardly a surprise that I absolutely love their first single.

Inspired And The Sleep ‘While We’re Young’

‘While We’re Young’ is the new single from Californian musician Max Greenhalgh, who has recently finished the recording of a solo album dubbed ‘Teenager’. Yeah, there’s a bit of a trend here. Naturally, the song is a melodic lofi pop number, but instead of being cliched it’s actually a fantastic example of summer music done right. With the warmer weather obviously on its way, we could all do with a bit more music like this.
