Bon Iver ‘Beth/Rest (Piano Verison)’

Bon Iver’s album closer Beth/Rest has almost certainly been the year’s most divisive indie song. Full of cheesy saxophones and guitar solos, it’s a long way from the sparse Bon Iver sound that we knew and loved. Recently Bon Iver took to the NPR studios to play a completely different arrangement of the song, featuring only Justin Vernon and only a piano. And oh my god the result is just something else. Listen listen listen.

The contrast within Vernon’s vocals is just mental, as his voice goes from a deep growl to that instantly recognisable falsetto in one fell swoop. This is just magical. The only question that remains is whether this version of the song is eligible for end of year ‘Best Songs Of 2011’ lists.
