In Short: Abbe May ‘Design Desire’
The cover of Perth-based singer/songwriter Abbe May’s third album ‘Design Desire’ is a fitting representation of her music, which is something of a convergence between raw sexuality and a dark, brooding atmosphere. She’s certainly not the first person to attempt this deliberately provocative style, but in the album’s finer moments she pulls it off pretty well.

Album Review: Beirut ‘The Rip Tide’
So I’m just going to say it: this is Beirut’s best album. From start to finish, ‘The Rip Tide’ is a sublime listening experience. At only just over half an hour long you may think that this record might feel lacking in substance, but quite the opposite is true: there is just so much packed into these 33 minutes. There is not a single second wasted, and instead of a lack of substance we have an abundance of fantastic tracks, any one of which could easily be a single. This is beautiful music, and more importantly it has Zach Condon’s personal watermark all over it. This album could come from no-one else.

The Essential Listening Of 2011 Up To Now
I’ve never been a big fan of these halfway-through-the-year lists, but it’s been such a diverse and fast-moving few months for music that I felt it might be a good idea to just sit back for a while and decide on the songs from the first half of 2011 that I would classify as truly essential listening. Some of these are just great individual tracks, while others are indicative of a fantastic overall album. Either way though, I believe these are just some of the artists that have done exciting things so far this year and that everyone should be listening to.
