Montpelier ‘China Shop’

Brisbane four-piece Montpelier play grand, powerful, poetic indie pop music. The guys have been everywhere lately, enjoying airplay on Triple J as well as supporting the likes of Frightened Rabbit. And they deserve nothing less: this is delicate, layered, complex music that is very reminiscent of UK’s Elbow, and I can pay it no higher compliment than that. Check out their latest tune, China Shop.

According to co-lead singer and bass player Greg Chiapello, who began writing China Shop in Ireland in 2006, “It’s a song about moving on, and being present. Letting go of the past and future to find yourself”. If the song was less amazing that may sound a little bit pretentious, but Montpelier write music capable of sparking such an emotional response in the listener that it actually sounds about right.

China Shop is available for free either via the Soundcloud player above, or at any of the band websites listed below. Montpelier are hitting the road soon in support of this single, catch them at one of the following gigs:

Sep 2 @ The Zoo w/ Timothy Carroll + Founds + Kate Martin
$10 + BF/$15 on the door

Sep 17 @ FBI Social w/ The Joe Kings

Sep 29 @ Northcote Social Club w/ The Joe Kings
