Brisbane four-piece Montpelier play grand, powerful, poetic indie pop music. The guys have been everywhere lately, enjoying airplay on Triple J as well as supporting the likes of Frightened Rabbit. And they deserve nothing less: this is delicate, layered, complex music that is very reminiscent of UK’s Elbow, and I can pay it no higher compliment than that. Check out their latest tune, China Shop.
According to co-lead singer and bass player Greg Chiapello, who began writing China Shop in Ireland in 2006, “It’s a song about moving on, and being present. Letting go of the past and future to find yourself”. If the song was less amazing that may sound a little bit pretentious, but Montpelier write music capable of sparking such an emotional response in the listener that it actually sounds about right.
