I’ll hopefully be seeing Sydney singer/songwriter Fergus Brown opening for Tunng at The East Brunswick Club in a couple of weeks (if I can actually find someone to go with), and I couldn’t think of a more worthy person to support the UK experimental folk outfit.
Fergus Brown has been around the Australian music scene for a while now, performing at festivals such as Laneway and supporting artists such as Jens Lekman. He released his debut album in 2009, ‘Burgers Frown’. It is an eclectic mix of folk songs, pop songs and rock songs, but the one constant is Fergus Brown’s witty and poignant insight into the everyday.
For the most part the album consists of love songs, but any love song that includes the line “You can keep your Lou Reed seven inches, I’ve got seven inches of wham for my biomed girlfriend” is just fine with me. It’s this constant juxtaposition of the insightful and the just plain cheeky that makes this music so excellent.
That particular line is from Nerds In Love, my favourite song of the album, and a track that perfectly demonstrates everything that is so good about Fergus Brown.

I want to go too! but am new to town and haven’t found a gig buddy that likes all the same music as me…
Fergus Brown rocks my world.
