I’lls’ ‘Take Higher Ground’

You’ve probably already been introduced to Melbourne band I’lls’, if not by this blog then by bigger players Who The Bloody Hell Are They, or Earmilk, or indeed the Parklife lineup this year, which featured some band called Ill’s before a suitable correction. The point is that they’re kind of big at the moment, and, with the release of their newest song Take Higher Ground, this doesn’t look set to change anytime soon.

It’s the first single from the band’s upcoming debut EP ‘Thread’. It’s another ethereal, pulsing track, but it somehow sounds a bit more complete than the first song we heard from the guys, Thrice, which was of course a demo at the time. This track pretty much glows with energy, encapsulated in that hyperactive and glitchy drum beat. While comparisons to a whole range of other acts, from James Blake, to Jamie XX, and even to the one and only Burial, are all perfectly valid, ultimately Take Higher Ground doesn’t sound like too much other music going around at the moment, making it a refreshing and awesome listen.

I’lls’ are launching their debut EP at Revolver on August 11th, and are of course also appearing at Melbourne’s Parklife.
