[Day 23: A Song That You Want To Play At Your Wedding]
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Hard To Concentrate
Well I say, that’s a bit personal now isn’t it. I can’t say I think about my wedding at all to be honest, I’m only twenty and not Ted Mosby. But I may as well keep the run of using ultra-uncool songs for this challenge going, so here’s a track from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hard To Concentrate, that I like to think will be relevant when/if I do get married (I’m going to do some ultra indie post next just to regain credibility, you watch).
This song was actually written by Anthony as a wedding proposal for Flea to his girlfriend, and it can’t help but bring a smile to your face when you realise that the same man who once sang “I want to party in your pussy” is now singing “All I want is for you to be happy”. It doesn’t come off as cliched at all though, at least not to me: instead it’s an indicator of the maturity of the new Chili Peppers, for better or worse. While their brashness and ridiculousness contributed in no small part to their initial success, remember that it was a ballad that first really broke them into the mainstream, Under The Bridge. They still have a bit of a knack for softer songs.
But yeah, as well as being a really nice, pretty, and well-constructed song, Hard To Concentrate sums up how I like to think I’ll feel when/if I get married.
All I want is for you to be happy
And, take this woman and make you my family
And, finally you have found someone perfect
And, finally you have found…
Yourself
So there you go. Well, this is kind of awkward.
