30 Day Song Challenge #22: A Song That You Listen To When You’re Sad

[Day 22: A Song That You Listen To When You’re Sad]

Big Scary – Falling Away

It’s a kind of morose song, this one. But it’s also one of incredibly beauty, yearning, and hope.

Melbourne’s Big Scary are nothing short of a phenomenal band, and this, Falling Away, is my favourite song that they play. I don’t feel that it summarises how I feel whenever I’m sad in lyrics- that would be impossible- but there’s certainly something about the overall feel of the song that just seems to attract me whenever I’m feeling a bit off.

They say it’s good for the heart
They say it’s good for the mind
They say the people we love, we leave behind
They say it’s torture and pain
They say it’s freedom again, do we know now?

Not many songs make me feel as emotional as this one, and I think that’s an indicator of a very high level of songwriting. There are no grand statements or anything of the like, it’s just really touching and overwhelmingly powerful simplistic songwriting.

But then this is one of my most played songs on iTunes. Does that mean I’m always sad?
