30 Day Song Challenge #16: A Song That You Used To Love And Now Hate

[Day 16: A Song That You Used To Love And Now Hate]

MGMT – Congratulations

I struggled with this prompt more than I have with any other one so far. It’s pretty rare for me to go from loving a song to hating it, and I’ve already been talking about past-Lachy’s somewhat embarrassing taste in music quite a lot so wanted to do something a bit more recent for this one.

Enter MGMT. You already know the story. ‘Congratulations’ is the most divisive album of recent memory, and you can plant me firmly in the ‘I think it is the most disappointing and shit album ever’ camp. But that’s not really the point of this post and I don’t want to get hated on too much, so I’ll move on.

When I first heard the title track, a couple of weeks before the album was released, I thought it was great. I had really high hopes for the album after hearing Congratulations, so much so that I went on a wild goose chase through the city following co-ordinates posted by the band in an attempt to get an exclusive first listen of the record.

I missed out by about 10 minutes, and in hindsight I’m kind of glad I did, because if I had made it in time I would have had to actually sit through the entirety of ‘Congratulations’ , which I am yet to be able to accomplish.

Whether it’s because my overall distaste for the album or the fading of my initial excitement about this song, I now can’t even make it through this one track. I don’t really hate it, but it reminds me too much of the album named after it to want to listen to it ever again.
